What is healthy eating?

We know that food is more than just providing fuel for energy, but if we can understand what our body needs and how it gets this from food, then we can learn to make better decisions when it comes to eating.

Food is complex, but let’s look at the basics by breaking it down.

Food contains macronutrients: proteins, carbohydrates and fats, micronutrients: vitamins and minerals, and water. Food also contains other substances, such as fibre, phytonutrients and zoonutrients.

Through the process of digestion, food is broken down into smaller pieces that can be moved safely and easily around the body. You may think of digestion starting in the stomach, but it actually starts in the brain and is organised by the nervous system; along with influences from the endocrine system (our hormones).

After digestion occurs, nutrients must be absorbed into cells to be useful. This transfer process can be interfered with by many diseases, disorders or intolerances making it even more important that we have a healthy gastrointestinal tract for optimal digestion, absorption and nutrient delivery.

One way to get a healthy gut is by eating healthy wholesome foods. We have heard that we are what we eat, so if we eat healthy food we are giving ourselves a better chance of being healthy on the inside too.

By eating plenty of whole foods like vegetables, fruits, legumes, wholegrains, nuts and seeds and staying well hydrated with water, your body will thrive. Improving your nutrition is one of the best things you can do for yourself, and it is easier than you think, plus I am here to help you!

A great bonus from improving the quality of the food you eat is that over time, is that you will crave the unhealthier choices less. Your tastes will change and you will find healthy food more satisfying than the other food you were used to before. You will start to feel better with more energy and you won’t want the food that makes you feel tired and bloated. You won’t feel like you are missing out because you will be choosing the whole foods that you now want.

You can change your future and be responsible for how you look and feel simply by making the right food choices. Your health is in your hands.
